[ARCHIVED] Upcoming Citizens Policy Academy Sessions

The Pella Police Department is now accepting applications for attendance in the 2nd and 3rd sessions of the Citizens Police Academy. The second session of the Pella Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy will start on Monday, May 30, 2016, and run ten consecutive weeks. The class will meet on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The third session of the CPA will commence on Monday, September 5, 2016. The September session will run for eight consecutive weeks on Monday evenings with each class scheduled from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The primary class location for both sessions shall be at the Pella Police Department. Several of the practical classes may be presented off-site.

The purpose of the Citizens Police Academy is to foster a strong and lasting relationship between the Police Department and the community by allowing citizens to experience the training and occupational rigors shared by law enforcement professionals. The CPA curriculum will include classes such as narcotics and criminal investigations, patrol practices, communication center operations, defensive tactics and firearms, traffic laws – investigations and enforcement, ethics, and guiding principles of law enforcement. The classes include classroom presentations, as well as interactive activities including building searches, collision investigations, defensive tactics, firearms, and crime scene investigation.

The following fields will be considered in evaluating Citizens Police Academy candidates:
• 18 years of age or older
• A Pella citizen, or attend school or work within the City of Pella
• Previous felony and misdemeanor history
• Preference will be given to candidates who commit to attending 80% or more of their session’s classes

The CPA is sponsored by the Pella Police Department and offered free of charge to participants. Upon filling both 2016 sessions, eligible applicants will be placed on an eligibility list for a future CPA session.
