John Liepa, historian, collector and speaker, will be at the Pella Public Library on Thursday, March 28 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. He will exhibit his collection of baseball cards and memorabilia from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and at 8:00 p.m. will present “How Iowa Met Baseball: the Myths, the History, the Players.”
Liepa has collected baseball cards for over 50 years. In addition to baseball cards, his collection includes pictures, photographs, autographs, books and memorabilia of most of Iowa’s players who made it to the major leagues. His presentation addresses the myths regarding the invention of baseball, the origins and evolution of the early game, how the Civil War played a role in spreading the game, and the first mention of the game in Iowa. He will discuss the first players from Iowa who played a role in the development of the game, as well as players from Pella and Marion County.
