PLANNING & ZONING Department

SUMMARY The Planning and Zoning Department promotes the quality of life and the preservation of the distinctive Dutch heritage of Pella. This is accomplished by the handling of new development requests to assure that growth is consistent with the Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and Subdivision Ordinances. The department also oversees sign and design permits, and building permits. The goal of the department is to balance the needs of a thriving community with its links to its traditions. STAFFING Planning & Zoning: George Wesselhoft, Director of Planning & Zoning, is responsible for zoning and subdivision administration including issuing building, fence, moving, and demolition permits, reviewing plat of survey, subdivision and site plans, rezoning requests, variance and special use permit applications, design permits, and sign permits. George works with the general public, contractors and developers on a daily basis to answer questions about the City’s zoning codes and ordinances, monitor and issue permits, respond to and investigate zoning complaints. George also supports the Community Development Committee (CDC), the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) and Zoning Board of Adjustments (BOA). Building Official: Jerry Byers, City Building Official, is responsible for issuing building permits, and inspections for the City of Pella. He also verifies compliance with the adopted building codes and ordinances for the City of Pella. Administrative Support: The Administrative Support Specialist, greets and directs visitors to appropriate persons and locations, answers questions, responds to citizen concerns, and provides general information to the public. In addition she maintains files and records on items such as bills, invoices, easements, projects, and special events.
