Dear Citizens,
After the winter we just completed with cold, snow, and ice storms, I believe everyone was anxiously awaiting spring in hopes of having sun, warm weather, etc. As I write this on June 11, one can hardly avoid wondering what exactly is going on.
On June 10th, officials recommended people downstream from Lake Red Rock take precautions as there was speculation that area would be experiencing flooding similar to 1993. Our thoughts at that time were certainly with all of the families, not only below Lake Red Rock, but nearly all over the state. Many people pitched in to help, volunteering their efforts where needed.
Our Public Works employees removed motors from our four shallow wells June 11th. Those wells are located approximately one half mile South of Howell Campground, and all indications were that flood waters would damage or destroy them if not removed. Our fingers were crossed that the collector well, located in the same area would remain useable as it is positioned somewhat higher than the other wells.
On June 10th, the new Lazy/Adventure River was officially opened. We were very happy with M&M Construction Company for their efforts in completing this project, especially in light of some of the working conditions they had during the Winter and this Spring.
I couldn’t resist spending some time observing how all of the youngsters, and quite a few adults, reacted to the facility. Hundreds of people were in both pools and if that day was any indicator, it will be a very popular attraction.
All citizens can be very proud of this new facility which gives us one of the nicer Aquatic Centers in the state and should provide enjoyment for many years to come. The entire Aquatic Center which has been built without occurring any debt to the City was the result of the Local Option Sales Tax citizens approved in 2002. Without that citizen approval, this project would have been nearly impossible to build, so Thank You everyone.
Thursday Nights In Pella is now in full swing and I would certainly commend the Chamber and all who pitch in to make this such a popular activity. Whether you like to attend the band concerts, watch the various activities, or simply enjoy great food from the vendors there is certainly something for everyone.
Don’t forget the Farmer’s Market located in the parking lot on the North side of First Reformed Church. These merchants have had a difficult Spring also and I know they will appreciate your support when possible.
The Summer months always see many young people moving around the City. They may be walking, running, skate boarding, or riding bikes. I would caution everyone to drive cautiously as some of these youngsters aren’t always thinking about car traffic. We would hope for this Summer to be another safe and enjoyable one for all.
